DONT BUY FAKE LUCITE CROSSLINKED ACRYLIC BATHS
There are some online stores selling low cost freestanding baths claiming to be manufactured from “Lucite” Acrylic Sheet. This term is used to describe PMMA acrylic in which is commonly a Non-Crosslinked PMMA acrylic sheet which does not provide the same performance when it comes to UV resistance, chemical resistance, surface hardness to name a few, compared to Lucite Crosslinked Acrylic Sheet.
Some baths use the term MMA, which is just the liquid form of PMMA, the solid form of acrylic. These generally are not using Crosslinked Acrylic to produce the bath and are not the same as Lucite Crosslinked Acrylic Sheet.
Non Crosslinked PMMA Acrylic Baths have poor impact resistance, wear and abrasion resistance, limited heat resistance, and limited chemical resistance. It can be prone to cracking under load and prone to attack from organic solvents. The greatest risk that consumers face is the discolouration that may occur from UV Light, which can make the bath turn light yellow over a period of time.
PMMA, non-crosslinked acrylic sheet is a low-cost material, hence why baths marketed as PMMA Acrylic with the word “Lucite” without mentioning crosslinked are a much lower cost to purchase and why they have a very low warranty offer and provide usage limitations in their warranty documentation.
Buyers be aware that some manufacturers and retailers are using Lucite’s trademark to market their baths without approval and are not manufactured from 100% Lucite Crosslinked Acrylic Sheet, manufactured by Lucite International Ltd.
They do not provide the same performance as 100% Lucite Crosslinked Acrylic Sheet when it comes to normal wear and tear.
Buy the real item. Ensure the bath is manufactured from 100% Lucite Crosslinked Acrylic Sheet.
